Alternative to MetaBrain
MetaBrain alternative for stock contributors: web + macOS AI keywording, $9/$19 generation caps, FTP, Getty CV, and when export-first scale fits better.
If you are researching a MetaBrain alternative — or evaluating MetaBrain for the first time — this guide will help you decide. MetaBrain is a web studio plus macOS app for microstock keywording: it generates scored titles, descriptions, and keywords for photos, video, vectors, and music, embeds metadata, exports agency CSVs, and can FTP-upload finished files from the desktop app.
That mix — trainable correction rules, Getty/iStock vocabulary matching, FTP from the Mac app, and Pro-plan local AI — is a different workflow bet from other stock photo keywording tools that stay export-first in the browser. This guide covers what the product offers (verified from metabrain.online, metabrain.online/pricing, and the Help & Guide as of September 2026), who it fits, public pricing, and what to weigh before you commit.
What MetaBrain offers
The public site (version 3.1.4 as of September 2026) positions MetaBrain as an AI metadata generator for commercial stock platforms. Two clients share the same backend: MetaBrain Studio in the browser (Mac, Windows, Linux) and a native macOS desktop app (Apple Silicon). From the homepage and Help guide:
- Four processing modes. Universal (Mode A) for drop-and-go files; Keyword Blocks (Mode B) for themed word lists; Similars (Mode C) for near-identical series; Batch Grid (Mode D) for unrelated production dumps. A keyword slider targets 20–80 terms (default 49), each scored 0–100.
- Correction Intelligence. Marketing copy says: ban a word three times and it stays banned; add one three times and it becomes required. The Help guide also describes a Learn action that turns edits into global, theme, and context rules.
- Ground Truth. Plain-text corrections for what the model misread (demographics, emotion, location, commercial intent). The first correction per image is marketed as free.
- Getty & iStock vocabulary matching. Exports for Getty Creative/Editorial/Video and iStock image, video, illustration, and editorial profiles rewrite wording to the agencies' controlled list (workout → Exercising, cellphone → Mobile Phone). Homonyms are resolved from title and description.
- Write & export. 22 agency CSV profiles (Shutterstock, Adobe Stock, Getty/iStock ESP sheets, Pond5, Dreamstime, Depositphotos, 123RF, Alamy, Freepik, Pixta, music sheets, and more), plus XMP sidecars, JSON, and DOCX. Studio can write IPTC/XMP into JPEGs; the Mac app writes JPEG, PNG, TIFF, and WebP (and sidecars for formats that cannot hold metadata).
- FTP/SFTP from the Mac app (Hobby+). Shutterstock, Adobe Stock, Pond5, Dreamstime, Depositphotos, and 123RF. Getty and iStock are omitted on purpose — they have no self-serve contributor FTP; you still upload in ESP with the CSV. Delivered masters get a Finder tag rather than being moved.
- Inspector, IP scan, rejection predictor, Trend Score. Pre-AI checks for resolution, sharpness, exposure, noise, and color; logo/plate/storefront scanning; title and description length plus banned-term and spelling audit; a 0–100 Trend Score on every plan (full briefs from Hobby).
- Pro extras (beta). Portfolio Coach scrapes your Shutterstock contributor dashboard. Local AI via LM Studio / Ollama on the Mac app. Music and audio metadata (WAV/MP3/AIFF and related formats) with Pond5 Music, Storyblocks, Motion Array, and AudioJungle CSV paths.
- UI languages: English, Spanish, Portuguese, and Russian.
Supported stills include JPEG, PNG, TIFF, and WEBP; vectors EPS, AI, and SVG; video MP4/MOV everywhere, with extra container support in the App and Studio. The comparison table on the homepage was last stamped August 2026.
Who MetaBrain is built for
It earns a fair look in a few specific contributor scenarios:
- Photographers who want the tool to remember banned and required terms. If you hate re-teaching a chatbot every batch, Correction Intelligence and keyword blocks are the product's clearest pitch.
- Getty / iStock uploaders who need Getty iStock keywords in ESP-ready CSV profiles. Public docs list seven Getty/iStock export sheets and describe controlled-vocabulary mapping before the file leaves the app.
- macOS Apple Silicon users who want optional offline local AI. Pro can point the desktop app at LM Studio or Ollama so images stay on the machine and credits are not consumed for those runs.
- Contributors who want FTP from a Mac app, not just a CSV download. Hobby unlocks direct delivery to six agencies from the desktop app, with metadata embedded first.
- Spanish-, Portuguese-, or Russian-first desks. A native EN/ES/PT/RU UI is uncommon among AI photo keywords products that otherwise ship English-only consoles.
MetaBrain pricing (September 2026)
MetaBrain bills in USD via Paddle (merchant of record; VAT may apply). The table matches metabrain.online/pricing as of September 2026 — confirm live before you commit, as tiers can change.
| Plan | Price | Generations | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Free | $0 | 30 signup credits | All four modes, Inspector, IP scan, 22 CSVs; last 50 generations in history; no FTP |
| Hobby | $9/month | 300 / month | Trend briefs + FTP/SFTP (Mac app) |
| Pro | $19/month | 1,100 / month | Portfolio Coach (beta) + local AI on Mac |
| Credits pack | $15 one-time | 500 credits | Never expire; requires an active paid plan; non-refundable once used |
Public pricing FAQ: one generation is one AI processing request — a single image or video in any mode. In batch modes C and D, every file counts as one generation. Extra AI actions on a result (expanding keywords, trend recommendations) each cost another generation. Hit the monthly cap and processing pauses until the cycle resets, unless a credit pack is available. First-time subscriptions advertise a 14-day money-back window; see the refund policy (effective 22 March 2026) for the general non-refundable position and case-by-case review.
Rough unit math from those public numbers: Hobby is $0.030 per generation ($9 / 300); Pro is about $0.017 ($19 / 1,100); packs are $0.030 ($15 / 500). Ten thousand images in a month is many packs on top of Pro — budget that before a sprint.
Workflow strengths
Trainable rules are a real differentiator. Permanent bans, required terms, and keyword blocks are aimed at contributors who already know their niche vocabulary and do not want a fresh generic list every batch.
Getty / iStock export is first-class in the docs. Seven named ESP profiles plus on-export vocabulary mapping is more specific than “we support Getty” marketing. Homonym handling (crane as bird vs machinery) is spelled out in the Help guide.
Cheap Hobby sticker plus FTP on Mac. $9/month unlocks trend briefs and agency FTP from the desktop app — a low entry for photographers who already live in Finder and agency FTP folders.
Four explicit modes for series vs mixed dumps. Similars mode is built to vary titles so near-duplicate frames are less likely to look like copy-paste to reviewers; Batch Grid is the production workhorse.
Pro local AI on Apple Silicon. LM Studio or Ollama runs vision models on-device: no generation credits, images never leave the Mac, and processing continues if the connection drops (Trend Score, Mode D, and Correction Intelligence still need cloud).
Native ES / PT / RU UI. For contributors who want microstock keywording in those languages without an English-only console, the four-locale UI is a genuine fit.
Limitations to know before you commit
Hard monthly generation ceilings. MetaBrain Hobby is 300 generations; Pro is 1,100. A 500–2,000 image upload month outgrows both. Extra clicks (expand keywords, trend recommendations, extra Ground Truth after the first free correction) burn additional generations. Mode D has no advertised file-count cap, but each file still meters one generation.
Credit packs require an active paid plan. The $15 / 500 pack never expires, but public pricing states it is available on Hobby and Pro only. Cancel the subscription and that overflow path stops — leftover pack credits are not a standalone PAYG product.
Getty matching still admits ESP leftovers. The Help guide is explicit: a term with no vocabulary entry is left as written rather than deleted, and an unusual or very specific word can still come back unrecognised in ESP. Homepage copy says the same in plainer language — you may still delete chips by hand. Treat CV mapping as a head start, not a guaranteed clean ESP pass.
Local AI and FTP are macOS-app features, not the web studio. The desktop app requires Apple Silicon (M1 or newer). Studio works on Intel Macs, Windows, and Linux, but Help documents FTP/SFTP as desktop-app only, and local models as Pro + Mac app only. Studio JPEG embed is supported; PNG, TIFF, WebP, and video still need the app or XMP sidecars.
No public Customer API. Public pages document Studio, the Mac app, CSV/XMP/DOCX, and FTP. They do not publish an OpenAPI or headless Customer API for DAM, Photo Mechanic, or custom pipelines.
UI languages are four locales, not metadata output breadth. EN/ES/PT/RU covers the console. That is not the same as generating titles and keywords in 100+ languages for global agency distribution — public materials do not market that range.
History is a short window. Help and the Free plan both describe history as the latest 50 generations, synced between App and Studio. Do not treat the product as a long-term metadata archive.
FAQ about MetaBrain
How much does MetaBrain cost?
As of September 2026 on metabrain.online/pricing: Free with 30 credits; Hobby $9/month for 300 generations; Pro $19/month for 1,100; optional $15 / 500-credit packs on a paid plan. Payments go through Paddle. Cancel any time at period end.
What counts as one generation?
One AI processing request: one image or video in any mode. Batch modes C and D count every file. Expanding keywords or requesting trend recommendations costs another generation each. Local Pro-plan models on the Mac app are documented as not consuming credits.
Can I upload directly to stock agencies?
Yes, on Hobby and above, from the macOS desktop app: FTP/SFTP to Shutterstock, Adobe Stock, Pond5, Dreamstime, Depositphotos, and 123RF, with metadata already embedded. Getty and iStock are not on that FTP list — use the ESP CSV instead. Passwords live in the macOS Keychain.
Does it match Getty and iStock controlled vocabulary?
Yes, on export of the Getty/iStock CSV profiles, on every plan including Free. Wording is mapped to the agencies' list and homonyms are resolved from the file's title and description. Public Help still warns that unmatched terms can appear in ESP for you to delete.
Does the desktop app work on Intel Macs or Windows?
The FAQ states the desktop app requires Apple Silicon (M1 or newer). Studio — the web version — works on Intel Macs, Windows, and Linux. Offline local AI is Mac-app + Pro only.
Can I buy credit packs without a subscription?
Not according to the public pricing page. Packs require an active Hobby or Pro plan. They never expire while that condition holds, and they are non-refundable once any credits have been used.
Looking for an alternative to MetaBrain?
MetaBrain's trainable rules, Getty CSV mapping, Mac-app FTP, and Pro local AI are a genuine bundle when you optimize for correction memory + Getty CV marketing + FTP + macOS local models. The trade-off is operational: you optimize for a $9 / $19 generation cap, pack lock-in, and Apple Silicon extras — not for managed cloud batches with predictable keyword-only tokens at 10K+ volume. For photographers and AI-image sellers who want export-first managed scale, named agency presets without a Mac install, or a documented API, AI Keywording is worth a direct comparison.
AI Keywording is a managed browser-first keywording studio built for contributors who treat metadata as a production line. No desktop install required — AI inference is included via managed tokens, pricing is a single predictable bill, and agency exports are built in:
| MetaBrain | AI Keywording | |
|---|---|---|
| Product model | Web studio + macOS app; embed / 22 CSV / Mac FTP / local AI | Managed browser-first cloud studio |
| Billing | Hobby $9/300; Pro $19/1,100; packs $15/500 (paid plan required) | Starter $20/2,500; Growth $59/12,000; Scale $129/42,000; PAYG $0.04/image |
| $/image at scale | ≈ $0.017 on Pro before packs; packs $0.03 | ≈ $0.003 on Scale ($129 / 42,000) |
| Batch / monthly cap | 300 (Hobby) or 1,100 (Pro) generations / month | Up to 10,000 images per job |
| Agency exports | 22 CSV profiles + XMP/DOCX + JPEG/App embed | Adobe V2, Shutterstock, iStock/Getty 50-kw, Bridge TSV, IPTC/XMP ZIP |
| Getty / iStock CV | Mapped on ESP export; leftovers still possible | Supported |
| FTP / auto-upload | Mac app, Hobby+ (not Getty/iStock) | No (export-first) |
| Local AI | Pro macOS app — LM Studio / Ollama | Managed cloud inference |
| Languages | UI EN/ES/PT/RU | 100+ |
| Customer API | Not publicly documented | OpenAPI — documented |
| Platform | Web everywhere; desktop Apple Silicon only | Web — any OS with a browser |
Choose MetaBrain if you want trainable keyword rules, named Getty/iStock ESP CSVs, Mac-app FTP from $9 Hobby, or offline local models on Apple Silicon — and your monthly volume fits 300 or 1,100 generations (plus packs while subscribed).
Consider AI Keywording if you prefer managed cloud tokens without a Mac install, need 10,000-image jobs, want named Adobe V2 / Shutterstock / iStock-Getty / Bridge / IPTC-XMP exports, output in 100+ languages, a Customer API, or PAYG at $0.04/image that is not gated on a subscription — especially once 1,100 Pro generations and pack lock-in become the bottleneck.
The bottom line
MetaBrain is a serious close-tier option for contributors who value trainable rules, Getty ESP mapping, Mac FTP, and Pro local AI. The Hobby sticker is low, the Getty story is unusually specific, and the Mac app can close the loop from keyword to agency folder.
The core tradeoff is workflow philosophy: MetaBrain optimizes for correction memory + Getty CV marketing + FTP + macOS local AI; export-first studios optimize for managed scale, agency format depth, and predictable keyword-only tokens. Pick the model that matches how you actually ship metadata each month. AI Keywording is one managed cloud alternative when the generation caps, pack lock-in, or Mac-app extras no longer fit your volume, OS, or agency mix.
